WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular instant messaging apps, has constantly introduced additional capabilities in recent years, but not without controversy. The Meta-owned chat app has either rolled out or been seen to be working on a couple of features during the previous several months. While some of these new capabilities are available via beta channels such as the Google Play Beta programme, others are still in the works and have been restricted. We are currently seeing one such new feature, which is the utilisation of individual avatars as stickers.

We’ve previously heard rumours that WhatsApp may allow users to utilise avatars during video conversations. However, a late report from WABetaInfo now mentions the option to transform an avatar into a sticker. The functionality was found inside WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.22.21.3, but it is not yet generally available, and there is no information on when the upgrade will be made available to the larger beta population. However, given the company’s track record of introducing new functionality to its chat client, the wait should not be too lengthy.

Screenshots show how users may configure their avatar to be used for stickers. According to our assumptions, avatar-based stickers will be sold as a single set with the avatar in various positions and a range of associated accoutrements.

Users will be able to designate their avatars as their default profile photo in addition to sending these stickers inside individual or group conversations.

Customization is the name of the game in social media, and WhatsApp is now catching up to other messaging applications like Telegram. It’s up to you whether or not you like the look.
